August extras

court of honor and family dinner
squeezing the last chlorinated drops out of summer
My brother (who lives in Hawaii) had a work trip to Virginia a few days after we got back from Hawaii.
Leo's annual allergy blood test came back showing that he had almost completely outgrown his egg allergy.  We had to go back to the allergist's office for Leo to eat an egg in gradually increasing increments over a two and a half hour time period.  Finally, after showing absolutely no reaction, the doctor cleared him to eat eggs!!!

first day of school

The school year started as soon as we returned from Hawaii.  I cannot believe that we only have one in elementary school and two in middle school!
a very excited first grader and an apprehensive sixth grader
a seventh grader who looks like he could be in high school
Grace had her open house a few hours after we landed in Virginia.  Her first grade teacher also taught Leo first grade, so I already know how terrific she is.
Harrison & Leo both started at a new school this year.  They are going to a STEM magnet school.  They both were a little nervous but (I think) are glad they are doing this together.
Here's hoping that this year is successful in every way for each of the kids.

Hawaii, part 5, Aloha

Aloha is commonly used as a greeting or farewell; but its deeper meaning in Hawaiian culture signifies love, compassion and mutual respect, promoting kindness and harmony among people.  We absolutely felt the spirit of Aloha on our vacation.
some of our aloha moments
Jeff & I even got to sneak away for two nights while my brother and sister-in-law watched the kids.  What a gift!
Unknowingly, we stayed right across the street from the Pokémon World Championship.  It made for great people watching.
The big not-so-Aloha moment was that our rental car had a window broken out and my backpack was stolen on mine & Jeff's first day away.  We went on a hike and came back to a big mess.  My passport, driver's license, military ID, credit & debit cards, $100 in cash, my phone, prescription glasses, two library books and more were gone without a trace.  It was a lot to deal with.  Three days later, this police officer called saying he had just arrested someone for stealing a Moped and my ID (along with two other people's) was found.  I was able to get back my passport, driver's license, military ID and phone!  I am thankful to get some of my stuff back, that the kids weren't with us and that no one was hurt.  I'm also thankful that we didn't let it ruin our vacation.  Aloha, Hawaii!
